The Top 5 Best Essential Oil Brands: A Buyer’s Review Guide

In the health world, it can often be difficult to decipher which claims are true and which are false proclamations of future vitality and well-being. We see advertisements for medications, supplements, protein shakes and powders–and wonder– where do we even begin?

The best essential oils and brands

Luckily, when it comes to herbs and essential oils, these claims are trusted and tested by countless numbers of people over thousands of years. Essential oils have lasted the true test of time and have become a favorite in health circles for their ability to naturally and effectively treat various illnesses as well as prevent their recurrence.

We can use essential oils for almost anything from household cleaners, shampoos, and soaps to reducing arthritis pain and stopping our migraines dead in their tracks. Got bad cramps? Essential oils to the rescue. What about preparing yourself for a baby? Yes, that too.

Herbal Traditions

When it comes to essential oils, there are no barriers to what they can treat, as each oil is created by a specific herb or blend of herbs, each with their own health indications. Herbal medicine has been practiced for over 5,000 years with current research reporting their amazing health benefits. From the unbelievable health effects of turmeric (preventing cancer, acting as a pain reliever, reducing inflammation and more) to the ability of lavender to relax the nervous system and help you fall asleep, each herb has its own distinctive and important functions.

With that in mind, it’s important to know which oils work best for you and to learn about the best essential oil brands and companies. We have put together essential oil reviews as well as various considerations to buying the highest quality essential oils.

What Are Essential Oils?

DoTerra Essential OilsEssential oils have been used for thousands of years by various cultures throughout the world offering a variety of health benefits for those who utilize them. They are defined by the International Organization for Standardization as “a product made by distillation with either water or steam or by mechanical processing of citrus rinds or by dry distillation of natural materials. Following the distillation, the essential oil is physically separate from the water phase.”

In layman’s terms, essential oils are plant matter that is distilled down into liquid form. It takes hundreds of pounds of one plant (more or less depending on the plant) to make a 15mL (or smaller) bottle of essential oil that you see in the store. They are extremely potent and concentrated, where a little goes a long way.

Beyond Beneficial

best essential oils and brandsThe oils are beneficial due to their role in biological survival—while still in the plant, essential oils serve to help the plant adapt to their ever-changing internal and external environments, for example; attracting pollinators such as bees, serving as defense compounds against insects and animals, protecting the plant from antifungal and antibacterial intruders and even helping the plant compete against other plants for vegetation and ground. Stay out of my land!

Because of their need to adapt, they have an assortment of health properties that can help people, ranging from antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory properties, to their ability to reduce pain, cramping, reducing headaches, preventing colds, boosting immunity, boosting fertility, lowering stress, diminishing acne, enhancing sleep and can even be used on your pets. And while you may imagine essential oils being, well, oily—they aren’t. Most of the oils are clear or take on the color of their parent plant.

It’s important to note that essential oils are not perfume, and don’t serve the function of scenting your pits to a glorious lavender aroma, even though some do use them for that reason. While these oils are derived from plant matter, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances and don’t offer any of the therapeutic benefits that essential oils do.

What Should I Look For In An Essential Oil?

With so many options out there, what should you look for in an essential oil? Aren’t they all basically the same? And why are some so expensive? These are all great questions, and they all have good answers.

It’s important to note not all essential oils are created equally, and the quality and price of these oils can range greatly. Different factors affect the price and quality of the oil you purchase. From the region where the plant is grown to the soil used (good quality soil matters!), growing conditions, quality standards (do the oils have any contaminants in them?), how they are distilled, did they use pesticides and more. And believe me, every single factor affects the quality of the oil you purchase, this is not just smoke and mirrors.

Unfortunately, there is no standard for quality control when it comes to manufacturing essential oils, at least not in the United States. That’s why it’s important to buy oils from reputable brands and sources. Some important considerations to look for when looking for the best essential oil companies include:

  • Did they list the Latin name of the plant on the bottle describing the exact plant used? There are many varieties of different plants, such as a Lavender, and some companies will swindle you with the less therapeutic variety.
  • Do they show where the plant is grown? Country of origin matters and a brand that labels their source lets you know they are marketing to knowledgeable buyers.
  • Is it labeled 100% essential oil? Some companies will dilute their oils with containments.
  • Is the cost comparable to other brands? It sucks to say, but a cheap bottle of essential oil may be too good to be true. If it costs significantly less than other brands, it’s a sign it might not be up to standards.
  • Is there information stating it’s organically grown?

How To Use Essential Oils

Now that you understand the importance of sourcing quality oils, how do you use them once they ship to your front door? What’s the method of treatment?

There are various ways to use essential oils, but there are a few major methods of therapeutically using the oils you buy. I’ll explain the main methods here.

  1. Aromatherapy and Diffusing

One of the most popular methods of using these oils is through an essential oil or aromatherapy diffuser. These nifty machines disperse the oils in the air so that their aroma fills the room with their fragrance. Many machines use the steam diffusion process where you mix several drops of oil into about 2 cups of water. The machine will then cause the water to steam throughout the room, allowing you to breathe in the beneficial aroma and enter your bloodstream. You can use this while you sleep at night, or anytime at home. However, this method doesn’t allow the scent to stay in the room for a long time as the steam will evaporate quickly. This is a great method for beginners and experts alike. Also, the side-effect of having a heavenly scented house is a great perk.

  2. Baths

Another easy and effective way to use essential oils is a simple bath! I told you this was easy. The best way to get the full effect is to mix the essential oils (5-10 drops) first with salts or an emulsifier like milk. These will help disperse your oil into the water. If you don’t use the salt or emulsifier, the oil will just float at the top and do nothing for you.

  3. Facial Steam

Place 1-5 drops of your essential oil into hot water or in a pot, cover your head with a towel and steam the face. This works great for sinuses, acne, headaches and more.

  4. Directly Inhale The Oils From Your Palm

One of the easiest methods around, simply placing 1-2 drops of oil on your palm, rubbing them gently together and inhaling deeply is enough to have a healing effect. This is a quick and easy way to get the therapeutic benefits of the oils. *Note* Make sure to only use oils that can be safely applied to the skin! Some will agitate or cause an allergic reaction if not used with a carrier.
