A Guide To The Best Essential Oils For Acne And Scars

I never expected to have to deal with acne as an adult. Didn’t I suffer enough as a teen? And yet here I am, a full-fledged adult getting ready for work when I see it: an angry red bump, the telltale sign of a budding zit. Awesome.

essential oils for acneAlthough acne is often associated with teenagers, it affects people of all ages. And while many individuals rely on prescription drugs and chemical treatments to treat acne and scars, research shows that natural remedies like essential oils are more effective.

Let’s take a look at the common triggers of acne, find out why essential oils may just be the perfect solution for you, and discover the best essential oils for acne and scars.

I’m an Adult—Why Am I Still Having Acne Breakouts?

At least when you have acne as a teenager, you can tell yourself it’s just a phase. But dealing with acne and the resulting scarring as a grown-up? That’s just not fair.

On the bright side, you can rest assured that you’re not alone: acne is actually becoming increasingly common for adult women, according to a recent study. Experts speculate that the demands of our modern lifestyle, which can lead to sleep deprivation, stress, anxiety, and hormonal imbalances, may be to blame. Medications like birth control pills and lithium can also cause breakouts.

What’s the Best Way to Treat Acne?

essential oils for acne and scarsMany people rely on over-the-counter or prescription medications to treat acne, but these medications use harsh chemicals and often have unpleasant side effects. They can also be downright ineffective.

Essential oils, on the other hand, are effective because they target the root cause of your acne—bacteria—while also soothing your skin. They also help to alleviate anxiety, insomnia, and hormonal imbalances. As an added bonus, they are over-the-counter, and often more affordable than chemical-based medications.

How Can I Prevent My Active Breakout From Scarring? What are some essential oils for scars?

When an acne breakout becomes inflamed, it can lead to scarring. Acne that is caused by Propionibacterium is the type most likely to become inflamed and cause scarring, so you’ll want to treat this with oils that specifically target this type of bacteria.

Some of the best essential oils for scars are coconut oil, citronella grass oil, holy basil oil, and sweet basil oil. My personal favorite is coconut oil because you can find it everywhere and you can use it for a million other things besides treating acne (it works great as a cooking oil, a digestive aid, a hair treatment, an energy booster, and many other things!).

How To Use Essential Oils

There are a variety of ways to use essential oils for medicinal purposes, some methods more difficult than others. The two main ways to utilize your essential oils is through diffusion and external application, both relatively easy and self-explanatory.

Essential Oil Diffuser

Essential oil diffusers use the power of aromatherapy to positively affect your health. By diffusing essential oils, you are able to inhale the oil particles distributed through the air, which then travel through your lungs and into your bloodstream. Using aromatherapy on a long-term basis has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, relax the nervous system and more. For acne, reducing stress levels and relaxing the nervous system are important components to keeping a blemish free face. Using an oil diffuser alongside topical application are key.

Topical Application

Topical application of essential oils will be an important way to obtain all the benefits of essential oils and finally eradicate your acne. The best method is to use 2-3 drops of your chosen essential oil topically to the area of concern. The oils recommended are safe for direct application, but you can always mix them with a carrier oil such as coconut oil for added benefits. Coconut oil has been shown to be antibacterial as well as hydrate the skin more deeply than other moisturizers. The mixture of coconut oil plus your essential oils will be terrible news for your blemishes. A general rule of thumb is for every 2-3 drops of essential oil, mix with one teaspoon coconut oil.

If you have sensitive skin, be smart and make sure to slowly introduce essential oils into your regime. And remember, a little oil goes a very long way, so don’t overuse the essential oils! Be smart and be safe.

Summary

If you’re an adult woman who is suffering from acne, you’re not alone. Our busy 21st-century lifestyles can lead to stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivation, which make us vulnerable to acne. But the traditional over-the-counter or prescription medications many people use for acne often have harsh side effects and are useless at actually treating your breakout.

Essential oils for scars and acne are a better option because they target the bacteria that causes the infection, while also soothing the skin and offering a host of other health benefits. Rather than spending a small fortune on yet another chemical-based medication that “promises” to cure your acne, try using natural remedies like essential oils.
