The other day I was strolling through my neighborhood and saw that a perpetually vacant storefront had been replaced by something I had never seen before: a matcha cafe. I’m talkin’ matcha lattes, matcha scones, matcha smoothies, matcha bread, so matcha matcha (yes, yes I went there. Girls just wanna have pun, what can I say?).
My frothy drink was so good, that I got online to order my own matcha powder for the house. What was pure excitement quickly turned to, what I have since labeled, “anxie-tea.” I was completely overwhelmed by the different brands and grades available to me. But, rather than be deterred, I decided to use this as an opportunity for some yummy experimentation to find out, what is the best brand of matcha tea powder?
Health Benefits of Matcha Tea Powder: Not Your Grandmother’s Green Tea!
Matcha is a superfood for a good reason, it’s amazing! The health benefits of Matcha blow your average green tea out of the water.
- May help prevent cancer: Research has shown that consumption of green tea can reduce the risk of cancer. Compounds called catechins which are found in matcha are so powerful that they may be one of the best ways to prevent this disease.
- Promotes Weight Loss: Looking for a way to drop the pounds? Matcha has been shown to boost your metabolism and help with weight loss!
- Could help protect the liver: Some studies have shown matcha to be beneficial to the liver. One study showed matcha helped prevent damage to both the kidneys and liver, while another study found it significantly reduced liver enzyme levels for people with fatty liver disease.
- May improve cognitive performance: Research found that several components of matcha could help cognitive performance. One study showed that consuming 2 grams of green tea powder daily for two months could help cognitive function in the elderly. Matcha also contains a more concentrated amount of caffeine than green tea, with 35 mg of caffeine per half teaspoon. Caffeine consumption has been linked to improvements in reaction times, increased attention and enhanced memory.

Matcha Tea: The Best on the Market
I searched high and low for the best in ceremonial grade and culinary grade matcha. I humbly share my findings with you, in hopes that it will aid you in choosing the best brand for your wants and needs. I will begin with my top three brands in ceremonial grade matcha.
I’ll be honest with you, the color is what got me at first. Opening the jar was like peering into the Emerald City. It only got better from there. Invitingly smooth, a touch of sweet, subtle…it’s the perfect tea for the matcha initiate. If you’re just starting to incorporate matcha into your routine, begin here. Not to mention, it’s Organic so you don’t have to worry about any pesticides, adulterants, or heavy metals.
If I could spread this matcha on my toast in the morning, I would. It’s just THAT GOOD. They get extra points for educating me. They explain that their matcha must be whisked with a bamboo or electric mixer since it’s not an instant mix. This gave me something to consider in my purchase, but also taught me a little more about the proper preparation of these mixtures. I appreciated that. Pure matcha is also 100% Organic, and it’s from Nishio, Japan. People love this brand for it’s taste, not too grassy with a nice sweet note. Check it out on Amazon!
This matcha tastes like eating a handful of grass….but in the best way possible. Like, grass that’s been drizzled with ambrosia from the gods, and toasted alongside macadamia nuts. I think I saved the best for last with this one. It’s also wonderful on ice! Encha is USDA certified Organic, and you don’t have to worry about any radioactivity or heavy metals. This matcha had been tested, and then tested again! If you want the best of the best, get some Encha Matcha. Check it out on Amazon!
Without further ado, here is my list for culinary grade matcha.
1. Jade Leaf
I was drawn to this company by their name, but they really do make a darn good product. It’s also extremely affordable at $9.95 for a 30 gram bag. Additionally, Jade Leaf makes 100% USDA Organic products, with nothing added. If you’re just starting out and want something that won’t break the bank, try out Jade Leaf’s matcha! Perfect for smoothies, Matcha Lattés, or cooking, this is the one for you! Check it out!
This is an all-around, no frills, matcha staple. It’s perfect for blending into smoothies, and has a pleasant flavor. It mixes beautifully into various treats-the ultimate sidekick of matcha, if you will. And as the name mentions, Kiss Me Organics is…Organic! People love this brand for its strength without any jitters. Try making a morning matcha smoothie to start your day right with Kiss Me! Check it out!
3. Zen Spirit
Once again, saving the best for last. You could have totally fooled me into thinking this was ceremonial grade matcha. The color, the taste, the delightful richness…this was hands-down my favorite from this section. I will definitely be keeping my cabinets fully stocked with this one. Check it out on Amazon!
